ACBA selects Century Downs Racetrack and Casino to host 116th bull sale
The Alberta Cattle Breeders Association (ACBA) has named Century Downs Racetrack and Casino, Rocky View County, Alta., to host the 2016 Calgary Bull Sale.
“After conducting a thorough review process, ACBA has selected Century Downs Racetrack and Casino to host the 116th annual Calgary Bull Sale,” ACBA President Neal Church said. “Located just north of Calgary, Century Downs provides a suitable new facility in a convenient location to host next year’s bull sale and associated events on March 2 and 3. It’s an exciting new chapter in the long-standing tradition of the historic Calgary Bull Sale.”
A world-class facility, Century Downs Racetrack and Casino has held a variety of events in addition to horse races since opening for business April 1, 2015.
“We are honored to have been selected by ACBA to host the 2016 Calgary Bull Sale with its amazing legacy,” said Century Downs General Manager Paul Ryneveld. “Although we primarily host horse races, our facility has the flexibility to accommodate the needs of the Calgary Bull Sale and its associated events. Located on 21 hectares adjacent to CrossIron Mills mall, near the junction of Highway 2 and Stoney Trail, Century Downs is easily accessible for consignors and buyers.”
The Calgary Bull Sale is the longest running consignment bull sale in North America and is a benchmark for other bull sales across the prairie provinces.
For more than a century, the Calgary Bull Sale has been a source of high-quality bulls whose genetics have made a significant mark on purebred and commercial herds throughout North America. Steeped in 114 years of tradition, the sale continues to serve as a valued venue for business, networking and camaraderie – even for those who have stepped away from active participation in the purebred industry or have opted to pass along the reins of active involvement to younger generations.
To recognize the contributions of consignors and buyers – past and present — who have supported the Calgary Bull Sale, the Alberta Cattle Breeders Association (ACBA) is proud to announce Governor-level membership status.
For an annual fee of $75 per membership, Governors receive the following benefits:
- Governor pin
- 3 complimentary parking passes for Stampede Park during the 2014 Calgary Bull Sale
- Access to the Governors Club, sponsored by Church Ranch, located in the International Room of the Agriculture Building – a place to relax, reconnect with friends and enjoy refreshments
- VIP seating at shows and sales
Fashioned after governors programs associated with some of North America’s largest and historic livestock exhibitions, the Calgary Bull Sale Governor-level membership will help ensure the legacy of the Calgary Bull Sale lives.

The Alberta Cattle Breeders Association (ACBA) is pleased to announce the introduction of the Calgary Bull Sale Internship Program sponsored by Church Ranch, Calgary, Alta.
The program is in collaboration with Lakeland College’s Agricultural Business Program. Under the direction of their instructor Robert Dixon, second-year agribusiness students involved in the public relations and event-management course will assist with a variety of functions associated with the bull sale.
The opportunity aligns ACBA’s desire to provide real-life learning opportunities for youth interested in agriculture and agribusiness with Lakeland College’s approach to learning and its focus on ensuring the value of business is instilled in its students.
